It’s no secret that Apple is working on at least one foldable device right now, but it may have a somewhat surprising competitor in that market soon.
This information comes courtesy of Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst for TF International Securities with a long history of Apple prognostication. According to Kuo, Apple is working on an 18.8-inch foldable device for mass production in 2027 or 2028. That part is not necessarily news; other sources have corroborated that information recently, with the idea being that the device is most likely a foldable iPad. However, one detail stands out: Amazon is allegedly also working on a similar product, with mass production planned for next year at the earliest.

Unfortunately, Kuo’s tweet didn’t provide any other information about the rumored Amazon foldable. If Kuo is correct and it’s a “large-sized foldable,” then it’s almost certainly a Fire tablet of some kind and not a phone. For reference, Amazon hasn’t made smartphones since the Fire Phone in 2014. This would be an interesting development in the sense that Amazon’s Fire tablets tend to be on the affordable side of the tablet spectrum, but foldables are generally anything but affordable.
We’ll see how much it costs in 2027, perhaps.
