The company calls the initiative the start of the “next wave of bitcoin-powered apps,” designed to make moving value as fast and effortless as sharing information. It seeks to overcome the limitations of traditional financial systems, including high fees, intermediaries, and slow settlement times.

Breez emphasizes open-source software as the foundation for the internet, powering everything from productivity tools to messaging and publishing platforms. By integrating bitcoin into these applications, the company aims to create a financial layer that is open, borderless, and widely accessible.

“Open-source is the perfect place to plant the seeds of a new economy, where we can break down walled gardens, free trillions in locked-up value, and make bitcoin as easy as clicking “send.””

The challenge is backed by Breez and partners including Lightspark, Tether, Plan ₿ Network, Fulgur Ventures, Draper University, and PlebLab.

Breez emphasizes that the challenge is open to individual developers and teams of any size, and encourages a wide variety of integrations, from tipping and peer-to-peer payments to bitcoin-enabled social platforms and content apps.

Participants are required to work with maintainers of their chosen open-source projects to merge bitcoin functionality into the main codebase. Participants should be able to receive BTC as the prizes will be paid in bitcoin.

Breez also noted that projects with strong GitHub followings will be viewed favorably.

Prize

Time2Build challenge offers a $25,000 prize pool, with awards determined by judges after successful code merges.

  • Top-ranked projects will receive $7,000
  • Mid-ranked entries will get $3,500
  • Selected projects will take home $1,000

The program also includes special prizes:

  • Silicon Valley residency at DraperU, which will give participants the chance to collaborate with founders, mentors, and investors.
  • Startup School residency offers tuition-covered access to PlebLab’s 2026 Startup School.

Event Timeline

The Time2Build challenge opened on October 7, 2025. Participants have until December 16, 2025 to complete their submissions and demonstrate a good-faith effort to have their code merged into the chosen open-source project.

Judging will conclude on January 8, 2026, when Breez will announce the winners based on technical execution, innovation, and potential community impact. Prizes will be distributed afterward.

What is Breez SDK

The Breez SDK is a software toolkit that enables developers to add bitcoin and Lightning Network payments directly into their applications.

It provides built-in payment capabilities without requiring developers to operate their own Lightning nodes or manage liquidity, streamlining the integration of non-custodial, instant bitcoin transactions.

The SDK is designed to fit into a wide range of applications, allowing features such as tipping, peer-to-peer transfers, and in-app payments to be incorporated with minimal technical overhead.

In June, Sorted Wallet integrated the Breez SDK to enable non-custodial Lightning payments on low-powered smartphones and feature phones, part of its effort to bring bitcoin and USDT access to underserved users.
